When Shirley Wagoner was a reading teacher in the Mount Union schools, she often had her students read the old stories associated with the area’s history. Her interest in Captain Jack was sparked by her realization that the Captain Jack stories contained a number of inconsistencies. She set out to try to resolve those differences and ended up writing this account of her findings, which was published in the April 1979 issue of the Journal of the Pennsylvania Historical Association.
